Sometimes you can get a break on your Taxes, when doing things to your home that you would be doing anyway.

If you ever need to remove Lead-Based paint from your home, you can deduct the cost.  Your Accountant might not think to ask you this question when you tell him you just bought a new home.  But, your REALTOR will hopefully tell you (to check into it).

If you ever need to retrofit your home to make it more accessible, you can deduct the cost.  For instance, if your elderly parent comes to live with you and you need to install new hand railings on the front door or grab bars in the bathroom, you can deduct it.
